WMR Hosts May Clinic for the Masterson Method® - Integrated Equine Performance Bodywork
Of the many meaningful moments we’ve enjoyed on the Ranch in 2023, hosting our first Masterson Clinic during the days of May 26th – 28th deserves special notice. The clinic was a Masterson Method Equine Specialist Course focused on instructor training and it featured two phenomenal instructors- Lise Lunde and Stephanie Wilkins, as well as participants from all over the Eastern USA. Throughout the weekend, Lise and Stephanie led several hands-on Masterson Method® bodywork sessions which spotlighted the profound positivity that these techniques produce in horses.
What is “The Masterson Method”?
The Masterson Method® is a unique, interactive method of equine bodywork that anyone can learn to help build trust with the horse. Through the bodywork, years of stress and stiffness can often be resolved in a few sessions. Relieving this built up tension in core muscles and key junctions of the body immediately improves the horse’s performance and demeanor.
With the Masterson Method you learn to recognize and use the responses of the horse to find and release tension. In contrast to traditional massage, it works with the horse’s nervous system and allows the horse to actively participate in the process. It is something you do with the horse, rather than to the horse. This participation and interaction are what makes the method fulfilling for those who use it while also being transformational for the horse.
The Masterson Method’s innovative form of equine massage allows the horse to release deep, accumulated pain and tension in muscles and connective tissue. Through the use of light touch and gentle movement in a relaxed state, and observation of a range of the horse’s responses (these visual and palpable responses tell you what the horse’s body is feeling), you’ll open doors to improved health and performance while enhancing communication with your horse.

Helping Horses (& People) In Equine-Assisted Service Programs
The Masterson Method Equine Specialist Program was specifically created for people and horses at equine-assisted service (EAS) programs. Horses that serve in equine-assisted service programs can be challenged in ways that are different from performance horses, both physically and psychologically. The participants during our May Clinic learned how to practice some of the very basic principles and techniques of The Masterson Method, while also having the chance to work with some of our Mustangs directly.
The 3-day-course continues to benefit our horses immensely. AND all of us– from facilitator Lise Lunde and assistant Stephanie Wilkins to the participants from all over the Eastern USA and us here at WMR – found that doing this bodywork had a very meaningful and powerful impact on all of us humans while practicing the Masterson Method. Each of us learned to recognize how subtle changes in our own body impacted the horse’s body, and how sensitive horses are to touch. Those practicing this impressive bodywork on our horses improved their connection with them immediately and – believe us – not all of our domestic horses and tame Mustangs are easy to connect with. All of us (including and especially the horses) truly developed greater self-awareness and deepened our mindful presence.
We have been so grateful to host this incredible MMES-Course that for sure we are hosting another course in the Fall: This time the Equine Bodywork Course is for every horse owner!! On October 7 and 8, 2023 we will host a Masterson Method Foundational Course right here on the ranch. Again, this workshop truly is for ALL HORSE LOVERS & HORSE OWNERS.
This Masterson Method® Weekend Seminar hosted at WMR is the next practical step after reading and/or viewing the Beyond Horse Massage BOOK or VIDEO. We encourage guests to read the book and/or watch the video prior to attending in the Fall.
During this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how to recognize and use the visual responses of the horse to your touch to find and release accumulated stress in key junctions of the body that most affect performance. These techniques have been successfully taught to thousands of owners, therapists, and trainers worldwide, enabling them to open new levels of communication and relationship with their horses. We are extremely thrilled to be able to offer these wonderful techniques to our guests and their horses, as we have seen first-hand the benefit that comes from them.
